It is based on the short film “Gomsu” of Iranian artist Sholeh Zahraei and Turkish Cypriot Kamil Saldun and on the true story of Efie Hadjicharalambous and AKile Siefki from Tochni. The film reflects the trauma created by the violent rupture of everyday contact between friends and neighbours, people that used to spend their everyday lives side by side. This ruptured bond is often never repaired.  After wars, many people do not see their neighbours ever again. The film was created in loving memory of women that developed the culture of leaving flowers at the door of their neighbours and loved ones when they were unable to find them at home. Creating this artwork gave me the chance to express all those friendship stories, good memories, and sense of nostalgia I was shared with the ladies of Peace2peace. Peace2peace is a bi- communal project where a group of women from all over Cyprus, cooperate and create open air crochet installations in public spaces. Crochet as a widespread craft art acts as a connecting point for everyone involved. I started searching for photos that captured moments from life in Cyprus that depicted this bond, focusing around 1950s as then, relationships between the two communities were calmer. It did not take long to find the photo of Effie and Akile and their story shared by Constantinos Emmanuel (creator/writer of “Tales of Cyprus”). By looking at the photo of Efie and Akile outside their house in 1952, what stroke me the most is the happiness in their faces. In this artwork, Efie and Akile stand as the memory of the bond they shared, like so many other people after wars.  The flowers on Effie’s dress keep their friendships memory alive through time.
