Identity, Mixed Media on canvas
Through the Peace2peace journey, my research led me deeper into Cyprus’s history — especially
into how women used textiles as forms of resistance.
For example I found that ‘alatzia’ — the traditional Cypriot fabric — became a symbol
of defiance during British colonial rule.
Women worked tirelessly, weaving alatzia day and night, to boycott British imports.
At the same time, many British households banned Cypriot traditional dress for
Greek-speaking servants, claiming it wasn’t ‘European’ enough.
Over time, there was also an effort to erase Cypriot cultural elements in favour of a
more ‘Greek’ identity, for political reasons.
Resistance through clothing, the quiet rejection of colonialism through shared
customs, became something held almost entirely in the hands of women.
Today, my work continues to focus on questions of identity.
