BreadMatters IV, "Crossing Boundaries Intersecting the Grain," Paphos 2014
Created for the BreadMatters exhibition in Cyprus, this site-specific installation unfolded within the dried-out water fountain of Technopolis20, a neoclassical former home layered with histories of domestic life and gathering. Bread—baked into fragile floral forms and placed around the empty fountain—became a symbol of life, survival, and continuity. In a space once shaped by flowing water, the bread flowers evoked nourishment in its absence, reflecting on resilience, care, and the quiet rituals that sustain communities through times of scarcity and change.
The BreadMatters exhibition refers to a series of international, interdisciplinary art programs and forums, curated by artist Inês Amado, that use bread as a central theme to explore cultural, social, political, and historical connections, featuring participation, collaboration, and dialogue through various artworks and performances. Key events include BreadMatters II in Lisbon (2003) and BreadMatters IV, "Crossing Boundaries Intersecting the Grain," held in Cyprus (2014). These events connect basic sustenance with broader human experiences and art practices.
